Institutional Works

Institutional work carries constraints that ordinary commercial jobs do not: live sites, public access, strict compliance, and a programme that has to fit around terms, rosters and operating hours. VPD Construction stages this work so the facility keeps running while we build.

We deliver projects for universities and disability service providers across Victoria, working within the procurement, induction and reporting requirements that institutional clients bring with them.

Monash University

VPD Construction has delivered works across multiple Monash University campuses in Victoria. Building on an operating university means building around students and staff: programmes planned into semester breaks and after hours, tight noise and access control, and close coordination with facilities management at every stage.

A large part of that work is upgrading lecture theatres. The university is phasing out projectors in favour of large-format LED screens, and the existing walls were never built to carry them. We open up, install the support structures and backing needed to take the load, and make good around them so the finished room gives nothing away.

We also carry out the builder’s works that sit around the electrical and IT trades: coring and reinstating floors for floor boxes, cutting in and patching for new screens, outlets and data points, and making good across a variety of room types. Lecture theatres, tutorial rooms, labs and meeting spaces each come with their own finishes, their own services and their own access constraints, and the program has to account for all of it.

The University of Melbourne

Our work for the University of Melbourne is largely maintenance and rectification on buildings already in use. That includes waterproofing repairs to decks and terraces, where the job is as much about finding what is actually letting water in as it is about replacing the membrane and making good above and below.

We also carry out end-of-year fix-ups across student accommodation. That work lives in a narrow window: students move out, and the buildings have to be repaired, made good and ready before the next intake arrives. We run it as a turnaround, room by room, with trades sequenced so nothing sits waiting and the handover date holds.

Scope (Aust)

VPD Construction has completed works across Scope campuses and buildings. Scope provides disability support services, and a large part of what we do for them happens inside supported disability homes while residents are still living in them.

That changes how a job is run. Works are staged room by room so the house keeps functioning, trades are inducted and supervised, areas are sealed off and left clean at the end of every day, and the programme is built around residents and support staff rather than the other way around.

Much of the work is upgrading bathrooms and services so they properly support the care being delivered in the home: accessible bathrooms and amenities, and the plumbing, electrical and mechanical upgrades that go with them. We build to the brief Scope and its support staff set, because they know what each home needs.
